Starting at the end (of the school year)
This week, my daughter will be receiving her report card for grade 10.
She hasn't been going to school too much the last two weeks. Grades have already been entered into the school's computer program, and there isn't too much learning going on.
Contrast that to two-three weeks ago, when there were three tests and two projects to prepare. Stress, tears, frustration and pressure. In the teachers' room, the same emotions are felt , as the teachers try to juggle their teaching obligations with preparing individualized feedback and encouragement for each student's report card.
And I am wondering: what if school actually continued till the last day of the school year, and the teachers had the first week or two of summer vacation - of the ten week summer vacation - to calculate grades, to think back on the entire year from a bit of a distance, and only then, write their comments for the report cards - without the pressure of having to prepare and give lessons at the same time?
Report cards could be sent to the students and parents by email or regular post midway through the vacation. Or, perhaps, students could come into the school during the vacation for a chat with the teachers and a heart-to-heart discussion of the report card and what it means to their lives.
Just wondering...
